Hi Ottawa Dancers,
As of March 3rd, the regular entry price for OSDS dance nights will increase by one dollar to $8 (including HST). Band nights will remain priced at $12 (including HST).
While we're very proud of the continued growth of our organization, unfortunately this comes with increased operating costs, and among them is the requirement that we collect and remit HST. On top of that, this price change will also ensure that we continue to have the resources to bring you amazing Friday night dances and have enough money on hand to maintain our beautiful dance floor, furnishings like fans and mics for our teachers, and better sound equipment (stay tuned!).
So while we are not at all excited about having to raise our prices, we are very excited about what the future has to hold as our community grows!
If you have any concerns about the increase, volunteering is a wonderful way offset the cost of dancing. Head over to volunteer.swingottawa.ca to sign up for a shift and get in for free!
Next week the OSDS is having a student night, in partnership with Swing UO! Bring your student ID and get in for free - it's a great chance to try out social dancing! All students welcome!
... and we'll be at the new location for the September 11th dance!!!
Our new home is at St-Joseph's Parish - 151 Laurier Ave. E.
This is a time of change in the Ottawa Swing Scene, with the closing of the Swing Dynamite dance venue at 450 Rideau Street.
We at the OSDS would like to express our sorrow and support for the many people affected by the loss of the venue. It's not clear as of yet what impact this will have on Swing Dynamite operations, or whether new organizations will step up to offer services. We know that many dedicated people are working hard on next steps, most immediately to keep Saturday Night Swing up and running.
Speaking of which, this Saturday July 21st Saturday Night Swing will take place at the Ottawa Dance Sport studio. Stay tuned on on our calendar to see updates on the dance venue for Saturday Night Swing as information becomes available, and join the Facebook page to be kept informed with updates and announcements.
It's time once again for what is becoming an annual tradition - we're taking a field trip! Join us for a fun bus ride to Montreal on July 11th 2015 where we'll be participating in Swing l'été*, a fantastic Montreal summer dance tradition. You'll be one of hundreds of swing dancers dancing under the summer sun in a pavilion beside the Saint Laurent river. We'll meet at 09:15am and we’ll be leaving at 09:30am from St. Laurent Shopping Centre parking lot, in front of Toys 'R Us. Once we arrive at Les Serres Verdun, the afternoon starts with a beginner and an intermediate lesson, and then hours of fantastic social dancing. Mid-way through the event, we'll get a chance to rest while enjoying a performance by one of Montreal's swing studios :) Swing l'été lasts from noon to 5:30, so we'll head back to Ottawa in the early evening.
There are so many reasons to join us on this bus trip, it's hard to list them all! But here we go:
- what a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of your fellow swing dancers a little better!
- the Montreal swing dance scene is incredible, a very welcoming mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced dancers - it will open your mind and inspire your imagine with new possibilities for swing dancing :)
- avoid the stress of driving yourself - and the leg cramps! - just sit back, stretch out your legs and relax
- no need to worry about distracted driving! you can indulge in all the eating, drinking and texting you want for the trip there and back
- experience the fun and surprise of somebody leading you through a move or pulling off a follower styling you've never even seen before; there's nothing like it!
If that hasn't convinced you, see pictures from past years at http://www.swinginmontreal.com/se/se_en.html

We can't wait until the 3rd annual O-Town Showdown! O-Town Showdown is an afternoon of lindy hop competitions in Ottawa focusing on great social dance skills, awesome attitude, creativity, and fun! Swing dancing has a long tradition of friendly competition going all the way back to the Savoy Ballroom in the 1930's, and we're proud to be keeping that spirit alive today. If you've never been to a swing competition weekend before, they're a great way to get inspired about your dancing, hear great new music, and meet dancers from all over the country! O-Town Showdown is particularly great for first-timers because all the competitions are open to all levels, there's social dancing in between, and you don't even need to travel! Whether you’re competing for the first time, the millionth time, or just want to watch, the afternoon is fun and inspiring for everyone.
On top of the competitions, O-Town Showdown features two nights of amazing social dancing to live music with the incredible Boilermaker Jazz Band! Friday March 6th will be hosted right here at the OSDS, and Saturday March 7th will be hosted by Swing Dynamite in the Glebe Community Centre's Scotton Hall! As usual, both dances feature an intro lesson and don't require a partner. Last year's dances were fantastic, with over 200 people attending both nights from all over Ontario, Quebec, and the North-Eastern United States!
If you’d like to register for competitions, buy tickets to the dances, or just find out more about the event, visit www.otownshowdown.com. We can’t wait to see you there!
Finally, if you’re interested in volunteering or helping out with the event, we’re currently looking for door volunteers and billeting hosts for out of town guests. Even if you don't plan on attending the event yourself, hosting billets is a great way to meet dancers from other cities and help out the community! If you’d like to volunteer or host, just talk to Laura Smith, Adam Feiner, or Bruce ShanOK, or send an email to email@example.com. Thanks!
OSDS is moving! While that much is certain, we're still looking for the right place... and want your input. Click on the link to check out the location, and answer our survey question to tell us what you think! http://goo.gl/forms/vHv0fJBjQc
**NOTE: We'll be asking you the same question tonight at our Friday night dance -- please only complete the survey ONCE (online OR in-person)**
The OSDS is proud to announce that once again this year we are sponsoring the O-Town Showdown social dance and competition extravaganza on the weekend of March 6 and 7th.
Join us at the Friday night dance featuring the Boilermakers March 6th - tickets are available in advance at the OSDS for $15 regular, or $10 student/senior, but if you wait until you get to the door to buy your ticket, it will be $20/15.But don't just come out for Friday night! Attend an afternoon of competitions, social dancing, wackiness and fun at the Glebe Community Centre, which culminates in the epic Showdown itself Saturday night with the Boilermakers.
