OSDS Gift Certificates!

posted Dec 7, 2017, 7:36 PM by Swing Ottawa   [ updated Dec 7, 2017, 8:01 PM ]

Would you like to give somebody the gift of dance? Is swing dancing one of the things on your personal wish list? Check out our OSDS Gift Certificates!

We are making it easy to share the joy of social dancing with the people you care about! Buy one of our 5-dance gift certificates, to give away or keep for yourself! We will send you an electronic gift certificate now, which will be exchanged for a Dance Pass when you present your gift certificate in the new year.

Dance passes are good for 5 entries to regular Friday night dances, and we don't care how you use them - come yourself for five weeks, or bring four of your best friends and use the whole pass at once. It's all good.

We're Recruiting

posted Jul 23, 2017, 8:53 AM by Swing Ottawa

Dear Ottawa Dance community,

The OSDS is extremely proud of the work we do to support and promote swing dancing culture in Ottawa. Recently, we've been doing some soul-searching and strategizing about the many things we would like to do, and the ways in which we would like to grow and improve as an organization.

Like any not for profit organization, we can only be as capable as the dedicated manpower we have on hand. To meet our goals and grow the community in exciting new ways, we are embarking on a restructuring journey. While we will maintain a core board of directors and officers who will guide the organization and oversee all program work, we are creating a committee structure so that more people can contribute. Depending on what each person is interested in committing to, people who join us in this capacity may become OSDS executive members (not on the board), or they may not if the role they choose doesn't require it.

We are excited that this will give the opportunity for more of the dedicated, talented individuals we know in the community to make things happen for swing dancing in Ottawa.

With this in mind, we are currently recruiting. We would welcome anybody who has a particular passion for swing dancing, swing dj'ing, swing bands and/or swing events and is willing to devote their skills to the OSDS.

We are particularly looking for people who are interested in contributing to the following roles:
  • Publishing social media - website, facebook, graphics, other
  • Corporate sponsorship
  • Grant writing
  • Liaising with volunteers
  • Managing bands (booking, developing skills to play for dancers, negotiation of rates)
  • Developing DJ culture (i.e. summits, mentoring, collaborations)
  • Community engagement (ie new programs for seniors, tech companies, community groups, or your ideas)
  • Youth engagement (i.e. working with high schools, university clubs)
  • Partnerships (i.e. with the Jazzfest, NAC, museums, others)
  • Dance ambassador program
  • Coordinating OSDS events (i.e. the anniversary dance, Tulip Festival)
We are also interested in people who see an existing gap in the OSDS structure or an opportunity for new programming and passionately want to drive that initiative themselves.

Our expectations of someone who wants to contribute to the OSDS by taking on one or more of those roles are that they will commit to the following:
  • one setup and one teardown shift per month (potentially negotiable depending on circumstance; more applicable to those who take on a core role; and less applicable for those who have a particular time-limited project to accomplish)
  • be present at the majority of OSDS swing dance events
  • be part of a committee dedicated to one area of focus for the OSDS; committees are expected to meet 1-2 times per month; depending what they are working on at the time
  • dedicate 5-15 hours per month (outside of the Friday night dance, scheduled at your convenience) to that area of focus
  • meet with the OSDS board of directors once every 3 months to discuss your committee
  • agree to volunteer in this capacity for a minimum of six months
We will be selecting a number of people who fit with our vision (or persuade us of theirs!) based on an interview process. Interviews will be relaxed affairs over coffee with 2-3 exec members, likely very close to St. Joseph's, and we are available to hold interviews at the following dates and times:
  • Friday July 28th 8-10pm
  • Saturday July 29th 1-3pm
  • Saturday July 29th 3-5pm
  • Monday July 31st 7-9pm
  • Wednesday Aug 2nd 7-9 pm
  • Thursday August 3rd 7-9pm
  • Friday August 4th 8-10pm
  • Saturday August 5th 1-3pm
  • Saturday August 5th 3-5pm
  • Monday August 7th 7-9pm
  • Wednesday Aug 9nd 7-9pm
  • Thursday August 10th 7-9pm
  • Friday August 11th 8-10pm
If you would be interested in joining the OSDS executive and committing your passion and energy to the cause of swing dancing in Ottawa, please send us a letter of interest via email to by July 28th. Please also indicate several interview slots which are suitable for you, and we will send you a date promptly.

We hope to hear from you soon!

Regular Entry Price

posted Jan 23, 2017, 2:08 PM by Swing Ottawa

Hi Ottawa Dancers,

As of March 3rd, the regular entry price for OSDS dance nights will increase by one dollar to $8 (including HST). Band nights will remain priced at $12 (including HST).

While we're very proud of the continued growth of our organization, unfortunately this comes with increased operating costs, and among them is the requirement that we collect and remit HST. On top of that, this price change will also ensure that we continue to have the resources to bring you amazing Friday night dances and have enough money on hand to maintain our beautiful dance floor, furnishings like fans and mics for our teachers, and better sound equipment (stay tuned!).

So while we are not at all excited about having to raise our prices, we are very excited about what the future has to hold as our community grows!

If you have any concerns about the increase, volunteering is a wonderful way offset the cost of dancing. Head over to to sign up for a shift and get in for free!

Respectfully yours,
OSDS Executive

Swing Dynamite Venue Closure

posted Jul 17, 2015, 6:24 PM by Swing Ottawa

This is a time of change in the Ottawa Swing Scene, with the closing of the Swing Dynamite dance venue at 450 Rideau Street.

We at the OSDS would like to express our sorrow and support for the many people affected by the loss of the venue. It's not clear as of yet what impact this will have on Swing Dynamite operations, or whether new organizations will step up to offer services. We know that many dedicated people are working hard on next steps, most immediately to keep Saturday Night Swing up and running.

Speaking of which, this Saturday July 21st Saturday Night Swing will take place at the Ottawa Dance Sport studio. Stay tuned on on our calendar to see updates on the dance venue for Saturday Night Swing as information becomes available, and join the Facebook page to be kept informed with updates and announcements.

There are so many reasons to join us on this bus trip, it's hard to list them all! But here we go:

- avoid the stress of driving yourself - and the leg cramps! - just sit back, stretch out your legs and relax
- no need to worry about distracted driving! you can indulge in all the eating, drinking and texting you want for the trip there and back
- experience the fun and surprise of somebody leading you through a move or pulling off a follower styling you've never even seen before; there's nothing like it!

O-Town Showdown is Almost Here!!!

posted Feb 20, 2015, 11:51 AM by Swing Ottawa

We can't wait until the 3rd annual O-Town Showdown!  O-Town Showdown is an afternoon of lindy hop competitions in Ottawa focusing on great social dance skills, awesome attitude, creativity, and fun!   Swing dancing has a long tradition of friendly competition going all the way back to the Savoy Ballroom in the 1930's, and we're proud to be keeping that spirit alive today.  If you've never been to a swing competition weekend before, they're a great way to get inspired about your dancing, hear great new music, and meet dancers from all over the country!  O-Town Showdown is particularly great for first-timers because all the competitions are open to all levels, there's social dancing in between, and you don't even need to travel!  Whether you’re competing for the first time, the millionth time, or just want to watch, the afternoon is fun and inspiring for everyone.

On top of the competitions, O-Town Showdown features two nights of amazing social dancing to live music with the incredible Boilermaker Jazz Band!  Friday March 6th will be hosted right here at the OSDS, and Saturday March 7th will be hosted by Swing Dynamite in the Glebe Community Centre's Scotton Hall!  As usual, both dances feature an intro lesson and don't require a partner.  Last year's dances were fantastic, with over 200 people attending both nights from all over Ontario, Quebec, and the North-Eastern United States!

If you’d like to register for competitions, buy tickets to the dances, or just find out more about the event, visit  We can’t wait to see you there!

Finally, if you’re interested in volunteering or helping out with the event, we’re currently looking for door volunteers and billeting hosts for out of town guests.  Even if you don't plan on attending the event yourself, hosting billets is a great way to meet dancers from other cities and help out the community!  If you’d like to volunteer or host, just talk to Laura Smith, Adam Feiner, or Bruce ShanOK, or send an email to  Thanks!
